wingspan : 25 mm
we found Hylephila phyleus at 1800 m near Guarumales, Runtun, 2500 m and Cunchibamba, 2700 m.
we prefer not to go down to the subspecies level as Hylephilus phyleus taxonomy looks rather inconsistent (see new facts page).
Hylephila phyleus phyleus lives from the USA down to Argentina, including the Caribbean and Hawai, flying from sea level to 3000 meters and more.
and in the middle of this huge geographic area we would have four tiny enclaves (of which two in Ecuador) with their own ssp ? it does not make sense ! and worse, the specimens of these "ssp" are in no way different from those of the nominate ssp, which, moreover, are quite variable !
