it is almost impossible to tell Astraptes cretatus from Astraptes creteus without checking the gentalia


our identifications are based on two criteria put forward by Evans : for cretatus the base of the FWUN costa is blue, brown for creteus, and the FWUN white patch is larger for cretatus.


if our identifications are correct, it seems that cretatus would be rather common in Eastern Ecuador, and creteus quite scarce.


seen at San Isidro, Sucúa and Méndez and perhaps at rio Shankaime.
