Heliconius telesiphe is a common butterfly from Colombia to Peru.

there are two forms: this one, f. telesiphe with white transverse bands on the HW, and f. sotericus, with yellow transverse bands on the HW.

normally the yellow band form lives in the North, south of Colombia and Ecuador (down to Loja according to d’Abrera), and the white form in the South, Southern Ecuador and Northern Peru.

if it is so, there is a large overlap as the white form flies at least up to the Atillo/Macas road, a good 200 km North of Loja! up to now we have never seen (personally) f. telesiphe North of this road. and f. sotericus South of rio Pastaza.

Sangay National Park seems to be a transition zone, and it will be interesting to get more distribution data.

It looks like a mixed form between sotericus and telesiphe does not exist.

there is another Heliconid, Podotricha telesiphe, which looks very much like Heliconius telesiphe, and also has a white band and a yellow band form, and its distribution pattern is similar, yellow form in the North, white form in the South.

Podotricha telesiphe and Heliconius telesiphe fly together.

in Peru there is a third form, with no red on the FW.
