Mechanitis mazaeus taxonomy is one of the worst.
in Ecuador Oriente we found four types of mazaeus figured above (four in Sangay NP, only three in the North East, and two in Loja Zamora),

- type "A" is to be found in the commonest two subspecies, the nominate and fallax,
- type "B" is to be found in five subspecies,
- type "C" does not appear in any subspecies, and
- type "D" is to be found in four subspecies.
so we think it will be easier and safer to present Mechanitis mazaeus type by type.
