Melanis smithiae collected near Puyo, at rio Tutamangosa and near Méndez.


specimens like the male above should be ssp xarifa (from Venezuela and Colombia),
- but there are similar looking butterflies flying in Amazonia and Southern Peru and that are supposed to belong to the nominal ssp,
- and, in Sangay NP, also fly specimens which look exactly like the nominal ssp.

on the underside  the last specimen has an extra red dot on the HW
