Male

Female

wingspan : male 48/55, female 53/55 mm

it is Elbella sp, doubtlessly, now that Ernst Brockmann gave us the trick to differentiate Jemadias from Elbellas.

seen at rio Shankaime, 900 m and near Puyo, Palora, Sucúa and Méndez.

the genitalia study has allowed Ernst Brockmann and Bernard Hermier to conclude it is Elbella azeta azeta, never recorded from Ecuador up to now, which is surprising as this butterfly is not uncommon on the Eastern limit of Sangay NP and in North Eastern Ecuador ; later we found the female near Mendez.

but identifying Elbellas without studying genitalia, and particularly from pictures in situ, is a hazardous undertaking.
