it is almost impossible to tell Astraptes cretatus from Astraptes creteus without checking the gentalia.
our identifications are based on two criteria put forward by Evans : for cretatus the base of the FWUN costa is blue, brown for creteus, and the FWUN white patch is larger for cretatus ; bad luck, the female above has a blue costa base, but a reduced white patch ?
if our identifications are correct, it seems that cretatus would be rather common in Eastern Ecuador, and creteus quite scarce.
seen near Puyo, and maybe near Macas and at Kapawi lodge.
